Interview with Maurizio Caggiano, founder of BASIC Records

In this article we explore the BASIC Records, an independent record label born in Basilicata and founded by Maurizio Caggiano. Through a dedicated interview, the founder recounts the birth of the project, the community philosophy that animates the BASIC social promotion association and the central role of emerging artists in building an innovative music ecosystem. From the enhancement of audio infrastructure to the realisation of LUCUS Fest, the interview traces the challenges and milestones that have made BASIC Records a benchmark for contemporary electronic music, highlighting the strength of collaboration, independence and digital vision in today's music scene.

BASIC Records was born in 2015 from an idea I had been nurturing for years: to create an innovative hub in Basilicata dedicated to electronic music and digital production.

G: Maurizio, how does BASIC Records as an independent record label?

Maurizio Caggiano: BASIC Records was born in 2015 from an idea I had been nurturing for years: to create an innovative hub dedicated to electronic music and digital production in Basilicata. Thanks to the Regione Basilicata's “Nuovi Fermenti” call for proposals, we were able to turn this vision into reality. BASIC is not just an independent record label: it is a community, a social promotion association that brings together musicians, technicians, designers, sound engineers and creative people with the aim of innovating the music scene in the area.

G: What is the philosophy that drives BASIC Records?

M.C.: The founding idea is that of sharing. Our statute speaks of a social multimedia HUB, and this translates into a structure in which each artist is not only an author, but also a promoter of his own work and that of the other members. In doing so, we reduce costs, increase quality and foster collective growth. At BASIC, music is a community experience.

G: What have been BASIC Records' main achievements over the years?

M.C: Certainly the growth of our community, which is increasingly rich in skills, and the evolution of our audio service, which now includes professional equipment of the highest level. Another important milestone was the participation of our artists at the LUCUS Fest, where they had the opportunity to perform alongside international DJs and producers. This gave visibility not only to the artists, but to the whole of Basilicata as a lively and dynamic place for electronic music.

G: How does BASIC Records support emerging artists?

M.C.: We offer access to recording studio, mastering, audio/video production and promotional support via our web portal. But above all, we offer a network. Each new artist enters into a system based on collaboration, which allows them to grow both artistically and professionally. This approach makes us, on a territorial level, a true reference point for those who want to get involved in contemporary music.

G: What is the biggest challenge for an independent record label today?

M.C.: The challenge is to remain consistent with its values while entering a market dominated by industry giants. BASIC Records does this by focusing on quality, community and digital innovation. Being independent means having the freedom to experiment and build new models, and this is our journey: to grow, innovate and continue to believe in the power of shared music.

Music tells you what it is like to be Universe

The journey of BASIC Records, such as independent record label, demonstrates how a local reality can turn into a creative laboratory capable of producing cultural value and sustainable innovation. The experience led by Maurizio Caggiano highlights the central role of artistic communities in addressing the challenges of the contemporary music market: from the need for their own digital platforms, to the creation of shared production spaces, to the development of professional services that allow emerging artists to grow without having to migrate elsewhere. The association's commitment to training, events and collaborative networking is a strategic element in strengthening the entire Lucania music ecosystem. Delving into the workings of independent labels, the value of the mastering studio, the importance of festivals for the visibility of artists and the evolution of the role of digital communities now offers an indispensable key to understanding how the music of the future will increasingly be born from collective, territorial projects capable of dialoguing with the world. BASIC represents one of these models: a bridge between creativity, technology and participation.
