{"id":1071,"date":"2026-07-11T04:56:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T04:56:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/?p=1071"},"modified":"2026-07-13T04:11:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T04:11:56","slug":"keng-maurizio-caggiano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/en\/keng-maurizio-caggiano\/","title":{"rendered":"Keng~, whose real name is Maurizio Caggiano \u2013 who's he, over a coffee and a chat?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019m just a pawn\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We met KENG~, the producer who has chosen not to make a living from music so that he can create it without compromise.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are artists who spend their whole lives trying to turn their passion into a career, and then there are those who do exactly the opposite\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I meet Maurizio Caggiano, better known as <strong>KENG~<\/strong>, I think I\u2019ve already got the interview all mapped out in my head. Over thirty years in the music business, seven albums released, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/en\/\" title=\"BASIC Records \u2013 Independent record label and multicultural hub\">BASIC Records<\/a>, live performer, sound designer, percussionist, teacher, developer, photographer, decorator, creative. The classic story of the independent artist who has spanned three decades of electronic music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We order a coffee, I switch on the tape recorder, and the first question comes out almost automatically:<br>\u201cLet\u2019s talk about you as a musician.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maurizio smiles, shakes his head, and cuts me off before I\u2019ve even finished my sentence:<br><em>\u201cStop\u2026\u201d<\/em><br>He takes a sip of coffee:<br><em>\u201cI\u2019m not a musician.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remain silent:<br><em>\u201cI am a humble servant of the cosmos. A medium.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I realised straight away that the interview I\u2019d prepared wouldn\u2019t be the right one, because KENG~ doesn\u2019t think in terms of career, the music industry or musical genres; he thinks in terms of energy, listening and freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cMusic does not belong to me.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does it mean to be a medium?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abIt means stopping thinking that music belongs to those who create it. I believe we are simply interpreters. When everything really clicks, it\u2019s no longer you who decides. You listen to the music, the audience, the space. You listen to the moment. The music already exists. You simply try to give it form, like a demiurge.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls poster=\"https:\/\/mlm8pp4ng9no.i.optimole.com\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/keng-dark-prog-melodic-techno-set-lucus-fest-2022.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/keng-dark-prog-melodic-techno-set-lucus-fest-2022.mov\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is nothing mystical about the way he tells the story \u2013 quite the opposite, in fact. He speaks with the ease of someone who has built up that conviction over decades of study, concerts and experimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A child, a Bontempi toy and boundless curiosity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story begins like so many others. A Bontempi toy organ, the age of four, the first lessons \u2013 except that, rather than sticking to the exercises, little Maurizio preferred to press buttons, adjust the stops and change the sounds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abThe teacher would set me exercises. I\u2019d do them. But then I\u2019d carry on. I was fascinated by the keys, the sliders and the buttons. I wanted to understand why the sound changed. I think that\u2019s where my interest in sound design began.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He hasn\u2019t stopped since. Piano, percussion, didgeridoo, synthesisers \u2013 any rhythmic instrument that falls into his hands \u2013 but above all, a curiosity to understand what lies behind every sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abAt a certain point, just playing instruments wasn\u2019t enough for me any more. I wanted to make them.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls poster=\"https:\/\/mlm8pp4ng9no.i.optimole.com\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/keng-oppido-lucano-2025.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/keng-oppido-lucano-2025.mov\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building rather than choosing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many producers start a track by scrolling through thousands of presets; he does the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abIf I can, I avoid presets. I like to programme synthesisers from scratch. Or record the world.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he says \u201crecording the world\u201d, he literally means going out with his Rode microphone and sampling whatever catches his attention: a gate, the sound of a factory, a door, the wind in the trees, a stone, a train; then it all goes back to the studio, where it is broken down, granulated, filtered and resynthesised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abFor me, concrete music isn\u2019t a genre. It\u2019s a way of observing the world around us.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are his favourite summaries?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abFM, because it creates incredibly rich harmonies. Granular synthesis, because it allows you to manipulate time in an almost physical way. And subtractive synthesis, which remains one of the most elegant forms of sound design.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pure Data, Max\/MSP, SuperCollider, Reason: rather than just software, they seem to be becoming musical instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cTechnique is there to help us forget technique.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point, I point out an apparent contradiction to him:<br>He\u2019s a technician, a programmer, a developer, a computer science lecturer and a sound designer, yet he talks constantly about instinct.<br>She smiles\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abBecause technique is there to help you reach the point where you can stop thinking about it. This applies to playing an instrument, to programming, to mixing \u2013 and it applies to teaching too. Once you\u2019ve internalised a technique, you can finally listen.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BASIC Records wasn\u2019t set up to sell records<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, he founded BASIC Records; the acronym stands for <em>Basilicata Sound Innovation Community<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abMany people only see the word \u00bbRecords\u2019. For me, the important one is \u2018Community\u2019. I didn\u2019t want to set up a record label. I wanted to create a space where it would be possible to experiment without having to ask anyone\u2019s permission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, BASIC is a record label, a mastering studio, a multimedia production company and a creative workshop. It is a natural extension of his vision of independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI never wanted to make a living from music.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is probably the most surprising remark in the whole conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abEveryone thinks it\u2019s a sacrifice. For me, it was an achievement. I\u2019m a teacher. And I do it because I love it. Not because I was waiting for something else to come along. I sincerely believe I\u2019m one of the happiest teachers in the world.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2023, he has been a tenured teacher at a school in Piacenza, where he teaches the Computer Science and Technology Workshop, Graphic Design, Information Technology and Professional Techniques for Commercial Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abThe fact that music doesn\u2019t have to pay my bills has given me enormous freedom. I can release whatever I want, completely change my style, and experiment. I don\u2019t have to chase algorithms or playlists. My responsibility is to be sincere.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seven albums. Thousands of tracks that no one will ever listen to.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abI\u2019ve released seven albums. But most of my work has never been released.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looks at me and smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abI think I have thousands of tracks that I\u2019ll never release.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abBecause many of them only exist during the live performance: I take them, break them down, rebuild them, layer them over my other productions or other artists\u00bb music, add synthesisers, percussion and samples \u2013 every performance becomes a different entity. That\u2019s exactly the part I enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cDon\u2019t ask me what I\u2019m doing.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever someone organises a concert, the same question always comes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat shall we put on the flyer?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abI always give the same answer. Please write: KENG~ Hybrid Set.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abBecause I don\u2019t even know what I\u2019m doing myself, and I say that without any false modesty. My two decks practically never play a single track each; they play together, all the time. Then analogue synthesisers, percussion, samples from my Roland sampler, loops, textures and effects come into play. At a certain point, even I find it hard to recognise my own productions.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audience is asking for definitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DJ? Live performance? Producer set?<br>He still hasn\u2019t made up his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abDefinitions are for catalogues. Not for music.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The real Selectah is the audience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a word that comes up a lot in conversation.<br>\u201cI\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abIn Jamaican culture, the Selectah is the person who chooses the records. I believe that the real Selectah is the audience; I listen to the dancefloor, I sense the crowd \u2013 it is they who, without realising it, decide the direction of the journey.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why it can start with ambient music, move through electroacoustic and musique concr\u00e8te, and end up in techno, forest psytrance, hi-tech, jungle, footwork, dubstep or IDM, without the transition ever feeling forced.<br>It doesn\u2019t follow a set script; it follows a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most important lesson didn\u2019t come from music<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1024\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1536 \/ 1024;\" width=\"1536\" controls poster=\"https:\/\/mlm8pp4ng9no.i.optimole.com\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/keng-ambient-downtempo-hybrid-set-2023.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/basicrecords.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/keng-ambient-downtempo-hybrid-set-2023.mov\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Towards the end of the interview, the tone changes \u2013 not because I ask him to, but because, inevitably, the conversation turns in that direction.<br>Three years ago, he was diagnosed with lymphoma; within three months, it had grown to a significant size, and he underwent twelve cycles of chemotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abThe doctors kept asking me how I managed it. They\u2019d say to me: \u201cOther people are completely wiped out after chemo. You organise events, play music, build installations \u2013 you just keep creating.\u201d\u201d<br>I always gave the same answer: \u00bbIf I stopped doing all this, no therapy in the world would be able to save me.\u2019\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pauses, for the first time during the whole conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abMedicine cured me. I\u2019ve never had any doubts about that. But my son\u2019s love and music gave me the strength to face that battle. When you become a father, everything changes. You no longer live just for yourself. Every choice takes on a different meaning. I\u2019m a very happy dad. And I think it was precisely that happiness that reminded me every day why it was worth carrying on.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, that period is behind him; he doesn\u2019t talk about it as a personal victory, but as yet another experience that has reinforced what he has always believed in:<br>that music is not a profession, it is not an identity, nor is it even a goal. Music is a place. A place where you can carry on living, even when life seems to be demanding everything of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We leave the caf\u00e9, and before we say goodbye, I ask him whether, after more than thirty years, he still feels the need to prove something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abNo. I just want to keep surprising myself.
